Understanding Dependent Origination of Condition, Cause and Effect developing Sustainable Climate Harm Reduction Habitat
Dependent Origination and cause and effect in our food and fossil fuel system of energy are long waiting habits of human harm increasing choice. It creates certain set of cause and condition for certain sets of phenomena to arise. Cause and condition are the two basic factors that produce or underlie each and every situation in the universe. When we try to bypass our Food Kamma (action) by mastering our mind for enlightenment of self actualization we only increase our Food Karmic debt to the tipping point of existential challenge.
Climate change can be seen as proposing challenge to the fundamental principle of the Law of Cause and Effect. Our proposed cultural food genetics evolved such a way that we are forced to distinguish between the operation of the natural law of causality and certain set of fictitious ideas of conditioned reality. Once a certain set of conditions are put in motion as conditioned culture of a clans or society they will have a certain set of cause, effects, and the law of kamma (action) by which an intentional set will reap certain results of inevitable change and consequences.
The Buddha says. “This exists, therefore that exists. This arises therefore that arises. This is absent, therefore that is absent. This is extinguished, therefore that is extinguished.”
This and that objective has no independent nature in and itself. They both exist together in a state of dynamic interaction. Buddha used the words ‘cause’ and ‘condition’ ‘effect’ and ‘result’ to help understand grand dynamic features of this intense interactive complex yet simple web.
Dependent Origination is not something invented by Buddha. It is a universal principle underlying all psycho-physical-emotional, social, and environmental phenomena in the universe. Dependent Origination is the interplay between cause, and effect, and conditions. In Buddhist point of view kamma or karma is not a destiny; it is a conditioning without a permanent identity and it is subjected to change.
Conditions are primary part of the process. Causes are their own properties that always accompany them. There are four basic kinds of conditions that are related to dependent origination as origin to Buddha’s First Noble Truth of suffering.
First the ‘causal condition’ of alleged mental cause of content that directly produces the effect is considered seed that produces certain seedling. The causal condition of certain cultural consumption pattern produces certain impact to the psycho-physical environment brings certain advantage and crisis. The advantage, fruits or disaster a seedling considered to be a causal condition of that seed.
Second is the ‘condition without intervals’ are also called ‘successive conditions’. Consider the cause of a thought gives rise to the next thought in activities of the mind. This activity of thought process is continuous moment to moment. They become successive and defensive without intervals.
Third is the conditional conditions are all external conditioned bearing on the mind. Conditional condition of the eye consciousness is sensorial color, shape, size, and contact impression. The ear consciousness is sound, and the mind consciousness is the phenomena of the past, present, and future.
Fourth is the ‘advancing conditioning’. All conditioning that encourage and do not hinder the arising of phenomena from its cause and effect are called advancing conditions. These four kinds of conditions can be thought of as being either ‘direct conditions’ or ‘indirect conditions’. All causal conditioned are considered to be conditions that operates directly both on internal and external phenomena and activities.
Dependent origination shows us the relationships among arising, depleting, and changing of phenomena as well as the origin of human suffering. Whenever, we ignore the reality of dependent arising and disappearing and are attached to the delusion of too big to fail, we intensify suffering to our existential threat.
In contrast, when we are mindful of the forces, that affect the phenomenal world, we prepare ourselves to deal with them in a positive and productive manner. When a practitioner penetrates reality with wholesome action supported by wisdom consciousness cause and effect is wholly and entirely free from the intoxication of pleasure principle, wrong views and ignorance, the underpinning of cyclic existence can be destroyed, resulting in liberation. When this wisdom is further empowered through the development of love, compassion, and altruism__ and the corresponding action of generosity, ethics, and tolerant patience __ the wisdom consciousness is capable of achieving an all knowing state in which one can effectively help a vast number of beings and sentient beings.
